Don't Let Me Go by J.H. Trumble

(Possible vague spoilers, but the plot is not discussed).

I don't usually review books. I'll bitch, I'll share my thoughts when asked but very rarely will I review a book with more than 'I liked it' or 'I loved it' or 'I hated it'.

I couldn't do that to this book. I couldn't put it down and forget about it. If you follow me on twitter, this is the book I was live-tweeting last night.

This is the book where I was 20 pages in and in love because it's everything I want to be as a writer. This is the book that had me laughing and crying, had me sad and hurt and disappointed, but only ever because the character were so fucking real that I'd heaped expectation after expectation on them. This is the book where the characters were so human that they let me down.

It had it's faults. The end was weaker than the start, something I sympathize with because I have that problem when writing too. The fact that this book rests entirely on its character's shoulders - something so incredibly rare - means that it ceases to matter. When you're picking up the pieces of your heart, alongside the main character as he picks up his, it ceases to matter.

This book is vague at points and hard hitting at others. It works that way. Some people may not like it, but you have to admit, it works. It's from the first person POV, there's no way it can't work.

This book is everything I hate about relationships - dashed dreams and someone needy - but it's understandable. The author never paints it as something romantic, a relationship we should all want (though, if you're a hopeless romantic like me, you'll be left craving aspects of the relationship). There's always this subtle undercurrent of this is why it's the way it is, this is why it's not healthy, this is why it's okay but really not okay.

This book hurt me and made me laugh. It made me envious and it made me sympathetic. It surprised me, and I fell in love.

Read this book, even if it's not your thing. Read it, but don't blame me when you end up a crying wreck.

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. If at all possible, try to pick a smaller or rarer fandom, one that maybe doesn't have the following you feel it should. Small fandoms need love, too, right?

This is quite a difficult day. I can't introduce people to anything more than my ships, really. I have Sam/Dean classics, I have H/D classics...but what else? But I decided to bend the rules again today :P I'm going to introduce you to classics in my ships, so maybe I can at least convert you to that.

It asked for smaller fandoms, but I'm not really a member of any. I'm going to go with Supernatural, Sam/Dean and some Gen and Harry/Draco because it's not dead, but quiet. A fandom where fics are slowly being lost - deleted by the writers, lost to server failure, anything - deserves a bit more love. It was actually really quite sad making this list because I've been shipping Harry/Draco for about five years and so many of my great loves have gone.

1. The Common Fate Of All
Pairing: Sam/Dean, (mention of Dean/OFC)
Rating: R
Summary: Dean Winchester works in insurance: brought up in foster care, he’s never hunted, never fired a gun, and never owned a car. Then, one day, he meets a guy called Sam.

2. Big Dick, Come Quick
Rating: NC17
Summary: Draco’s got a theory. About sex. And after much searching for the right candidate, it appears that only Harry Potter, his life long enemy, can help him test it out.
Length: 196,000
Warnings/genre etc.: Porn with inconsequential plot. Romance.

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

I debated writing a fic, but I've got a killer headache so I'd probably go insane. Instead, I decided to create a rec list. On some of the other days, I've had to pass over some of my absolute favourite fics because they didn't quite fulfill the requirements. So, here we go. Some of my absolute favourite fics - no specifications. There's a lot of them. I'm too lazy to double check other days, so apologies if I repeat some.

Glee, Supernatural and XFMC recs. )

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Drop a link to your wish-list in this post. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Maybe you will grant a wish.

I'm terrible about talking about things I want. I mean, I'm not exactly holding anyone at point blank range and forcing them to DO THESE THINGS FOR ME, but we very much live in a culture where asking for things for yourself is "selfish", as opposed to, you know, a very human concept. But, you know what, I do want things, and maybe someone out there wants a reason to make things.

Along that line, if you participate today, please, please, please link me to your post! I'll be checking the masterlist when it's posted, but if I can make you something, I'd really like to.

4 things under the cut - SPN, XMFC, MULTI-FANDOM, WRITING )

Little bit behind here, I'll post day 7 later probably. I'm actually still working on Day 5 :P

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

Asunder
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Matthew 19:6). [Dean/Castiel].
I started with this one for one main reason. It is the only fic in my bookmark that fully fits the challenge. I chose this fic because I do not ship Dean/Castiel. In fact, I have moral issues with Dean/Cas (though if you ship it, I don't care, that's your business, not mine, I also have no moral high ground considering I ship Sam/Dean). However, I decided to give this one a go because the problem I have with Dean/Cas is eradicated via the fact it's an AU. And. I fell in love. It's a gorgeous fic and I was genuinely surprised by how much I love it, considering Sam and Dean are my OTP in both the romantic and platonic sense and they can barely stand each other in this fic. I'd definietly recommend it, whether or not it's your ship.

Masqueraded as a cold pillow.
Sam and Jess and Dean and combinations thereof. Hard R.
I wanted to rec a different Sam/Jess/Dean fic, but this one was the first I read, so I chose this one. It's an interesting pairing (what do you call a pairing with 3 people o_o) and I wasn't sure I'd like it - I'm not rabid about people "getting in the way of my ship" but yk, it's my ship, I prefer to read it the way it is. But this is an interesting dynamic. I've got a lot of feelings about Sam/Dean/Jess, and if you'd like the fic I wanted to rec, let me know. It's amazing.

Green and Gamboge
Dean gets himself bound to gremlins. Hilarious crack fic and oh lord, he makes the gremlins hats.
I chose this one because I don't read crack, not really. I write it, sure - Harry Potter/Glee crossovers, anyone? - but I don't read it. I'm not a...frivolous reader. Most of the fics in my bookmarks are plotty and angsty and there are a lot of AU's because I want ALL OF THE ANGST. I don't want a five minute fix and then I've got to find another fic again, I want something that I can read for hours and that'll stay with me for just as long.

But this one is incredibly funny :p

As always, I'm totally open for discussion! If you want to know why I don't like Dean/Cas, go ahead and ask! I'd actually really like to discuss that - with people who ship it and people who don't. Let's talk about Jess! I like talking, okay? <3 And as always, your ship won't be bashed, and neither will your opinions. Even if you really have a thing for Sam/Leviathan vore.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

This one's quite easy for me. I bookmark every fic I find good enough to read on diigo, and a few fanmixes too. I've decided to do three of my favourite fics and three of my favourite fanmixes. I've tried to aim for ones with less comments, but that was easier for the fanmixes than the fics. In the end, I decided anything with only 1 page of comments counted as less. That was a tough one - I wanted to rec fics I really loved, fics I thought so wonderful they became a favourite. Naturally, that means they're very good and a lot of people love them. I stuck to it though, and I hope you enjoy what I chose! :)

Early Bird Special
Summary: Sam/Dean as an old married couple after retiring from hunting to Florida. They bicker. And eat dinner at 5:30.
Pairing: Sam/Dean

And When I Kiss, I Like To Smother
Summary: The first clear day of the season, and the air is choking with life.
Pairing: Sam/Dean

The Solar Systems Of Our Cells
Summary: Kurt is the light of the moon.
Pairing: Kurt/Blaine

Fanmixes. )

If anyone would like some more recs, for fics that make my heart sing but I didn't include here because of comment counts, toss the ship/fandom at me and if I have any bookmarked, I'll give you them :)

Found here.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

This is quite difficult. I really don't post a lot of my work. I wrote 235k last year, and posted maybe 50k of it. I keep a lot of it too myself, and I'm not sure why that is. I write a lot of SPN crossovers and I never post any of them. I guess I just don't think people are interested.

That does make this challenge quite hard. I don't have a lot of posted stuff to work from, but here goes.

Title: Pure Theatre
Rating: PG-13/R
Spoilers: None
Warnings: (Slight) future!Fic
Word Count: 807
Summary: Sometimes, Kurt makes him feel like a nervous sixteen year old again, with shaking hands and a shaking voice.
Here.
I chose this one because it very much sums up my 'style'. This is the type of writing I find the easiest. I can knock something out like this in less than 10 minutes, but I always force myself into styles I find less easy because a) I want to challenge myself and b) I'm pretty sure people prefer something that's not a ton of lyrical waxing. People do say they like my style, but they see it so little that I wonder.
